Aale Ahmed Saroor

Ale Ahmad Suroor was the grand old man of not just Urdu adab but all of Urdu Tahzeeb. 

His death at the ripe old age of 91 years on 9 February 2002 has left a void in the 
world of Urdu letters. Born in 1911 in the historic city of Budayun. Suroor Sahab's 
own poetry had none of the wild passion and rebellion that marked much of the poetry 
of Urdu progressive writers, especially the poetry written in free-verse. 

Like beauty, he believed, poetry too had a thousand faces. In contrast to his vastly 
erudite and extremely scholarly critical writings, his ghazals and na ms have a sweet 
simplicity and a melodious, distinctly non-cerebral quality. Where his scholarly work 
is written from the head and appeals to reason and good sense and learning, his poetry 
is written from the heart.

ye andheraa ye talaatum ye havaaon kaa Kharosh

aql-o-dil Khvaab-o-haqeeqat ki na uljhan na Khalish
muKhtalif jalve nigaahon ko na bahalaate the
narm rau vaqt ke dhaare pe safeene the ravaan
saahil-o-bahr ke aaein na badalate the kabhi
naaKhudaaon pe bharosaa thaa muqaddar pe yaqeein
chaadar-e-aab se tuufaan na ubalate the kabhi

ham ke tuufaanon ke paale bhi sataaye bhi hain
barq-o-baaraan mein vo hee shamein jalaayein kaise
ye jo aatish_kadaa duniyaa mein bha.Dak uTThaa hai
aansuon se use har baar bujhaayein kaise

kar diyaa barq-o-buKhaaraat ne mahashar barpaa 
apane daftar mein litaafat ke sivaa kuchh bhi naheein 
ghir gaye vaqt ki beraham kashaakash mein magar 
paas tahazeeb ki daulat ke sivaa kuchh bhi naheein
